Desk Mat Size Guide: What Size Do You Actually Need?
Quick answer: for most desks, an 80cm x 40cm (31.5" x 15.6") desk mat is the right choice. It holds a keyboard and mouse comfortably with space either side, fits any desk from 100cm wide upward, and leaves room for a laptop or notebook at the edges. Go smaller (around 60cm x 35cm) if your desk is compact or you want the mat to frame just the typing zone, and go mouse-pad-only if you work directly on a laptop.
That's the short version. Here's how to get it right for your exact desk.
Common desk mat sizes compared
Desk mats cluster around three broad sizes:
- Large (80cm x 40cm and up) — the standard for full setups. Keyboard, mouse, and elbow room all live on the mat. This is the size of our Premium Desk Mat and Merino Wool Felt Desk Mat.
- Medium (around 60cm x 35cm) — frames the keyboard and mouse tightly. Suits smaller desks or setups where the laptop sits beside the mat rather than on it. Our full-grain Leather Desk Mat is this size.
- Mouse pad (20–25cm) — covers the mouse zone only. Right for laptop-only setups or alongside a keyboard you prefer directly on the desk. Ours is a 25cm round full-grain leather pad.

Match the mat to your desk width
The mat should occupy roughly 50–70% of your desk's width. Less than that and it looks like an island; much more and the desk disappears.
- 100cm desk — 60cm x 35cm mat. An 80cm mat fits but dominates.
- 120cm desk — either works; 80cm x 40cm if the keyboard and mouse are your whole setup, 60cm if a laptop or lamp shares the surface.
- 140cm desk — 80cm x 40cm. This is the sweet spot pairing.
- 160cm+ desk — 80cm x 40cm or larger. On big desks the mat defines the work zone and stops the surface becoming a dumping ground.
How to measure before you buy
Three checks, one minute:
- Width: measure your desk edge to edge, then check the mat is 50–70% of it.
- Depth: you want at least 10cm of bare desk behind the mat for a monitor stand or laptop hinge, and the mat's front edge flush with or slightly back from the desk edge. A 40cm-deep mat needs a desk at least 60cm deep to sit naturally.
- Your mouse range: if you use a low mouse sensitivity or make broad sweeps, make sure there's at least 30cm of mat to the right (or left) of your keyboard.
Placement: three layouts that work
- Everything on the mat — keyboard and mouse centered, phone or notebook at the edge. Works best at 80cm x 40cm. The mat visually frames the entire working zone.
- Typing zone only — a 60cm mat under keyboard and mouse, laptop on a stand beside it. Tighter look, good for narrower desks.
- Mouse zone only — a round 25cm pad next to the laptop. Minimal footprint, protects the spot that takes the most wear.
Does thickness matter?
Yes, more than length and width in day-to-day feel. Around 2mm — the thickness of our vegan leather mats — is the sweet spot: enough cushioning for wrists and enough grip to stay put, without your keyboard rocking. Very thick mats (5mm+) feel spongy under a keyboard, and very thin ones slide and curl.
One note from experience: desk mats ship rolled. Give any mat a few days flat, and it will settle completely.

Frequently asked questions
What is the standard desk mat size?
80cm x 40cm (31.5" x 15.6") is the most common size and suits most desks 120cm wide or more. It fits a keyboard and mouse with comfortable room either side.
Should a desk mat cover the whole desk?
No — a desk mat works best covering 50–70% of the desk width, framing the working zone. If you want edge-to-edge coverage, you're better served by a custom-cut desk pad.
What size desk mat for a 120cm desk?
Both common sizes work on a 120cm desk. Choose 80cm x 40cm if the keyboard and mouse are the whole setup; choose around 60cm x 35cm if a laptop or lamp shares the surface.
Can a desk mat be too big?
If the mat hangs over the desk edges or pushes your monitor stand onto it awkwardly, it's too big. Keep at least 10cm of bare desk behind the mat and stay within the desk's footprint.
