Leather vs Felt vs Vegan Leather Desk Mats: Which Is Right for You?
We make desk mats in all three materials, so this isn't a comparison written to push you toward one answer. Each material genuinely suits a different kind of person and setup. Here's the honest breakdown — including the downsides of each.
The 30-second verdict
- Vegan leather — the practical all-rounder. Uniform look, wipes clean in seconds, most affordable. Choose it if you want zero maintenance and a consistent, minimal aesthetic.
- Full-grain leather — the one that gets better with age. Develops a patina unique to you, feels premium every time you touch it. Choose it if you like natural materials and don't mind character marks.
- Merino wool felt — the warm one. Softest touch, quietens a hard desk, adds texture to a setup. Choose it if your workspace feels cold or clinical and you want to soften it.
Full-grain leather: the material with a life of its own
Full-grain is the highest grade of leather available — the complete hide surface, not sanded or corrected. That means every mat has its own grain pattern, and it's why a full-grain mat from one batch never looks quite like another.
The patina is the point. Over months of use, the leather darkens slightly where your hands rest, takes on a soft sheen, and develops the kind of finish you can't manufacture. If you like products that record their use — good boots, a well-worn wallet — this is your material. Our full-grain Leather Desk Mat is vegetable tanned, 60cm x 35cm, and part of our Lux Collection.
The honest downsides: it costs more, it will show marks (that's the same property that creates patina — you don't get one without the other), and it wants occasional care. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth; a small amount of leather conditioner once or twice a year keeps it supple.

Merino wool felt: the tactile one
100% merino wool felt is a different experience entirely. It's luxuriously soft, naturally heat and moisture resistant, and it does something the leathers don't: it deadens sound. Keyboards sound softer, things set down on it land silently, and a glass desk or hard laminate immediately feels warmer.
Our Merino Wool Felt Desk Mat is handcrafted at 80cm x 40cm in a black and dark grey blend — a generous surface for laptop, keyboard, and mouse together.
The honest downsides: felt collects dust and lint more readily than leather (a lint roller or gentle vacuum pass sorts it), it can't just be wiped clean after a coffee splash — blot quickly instead — and mouse tracking feels slightly softer and slower than on a firm leather surface. Some people prefer that feel; precision-mouse users usually don't.

Vegan leather: the practical choice
Vegan leather (a PU-based material) is what our best-selling Premium Desk Mat is made from, and there's a reason it's the one bought by thousands. It has a completely uniform, matte surface that suits minimal setups perfectly. Spills wipe off with one pass of a cloth. Mouse tracking is fast and consistent across the whole surface. And at 2mm thick it lies flat, grips the desk, and cushions your wrists without any sponginess.
It also comes in colors natural leather can't do cleanly — grey and blush pink alongside black and brown.
The honest downsides: it doesn't age. That uniform surface on day one is the same surface in year three — which is exactly what many people want, but if you're after character and patina, it won't develop any. It's durable, but a deep scratch is a scratch; it won't blend in the way marks on full-grain eventually do.

Side by side
- Look: vegan leather is uniform and modern; full-grain is natural and unique; felt is soft and textural.
- Feel under hands: felt is warmest and softest; full-grain is smooth with natural grain; vegan leather is smooth and matte.
- Mouse tracking: vegan leather and full-grain are both fast and precise; felt is softer and slightly slower.
- Spill resistance: vegan leather wins outright; full-grain tolerates quick blotting; felt resists moisture naturally but needs fast action.
- Aging: full-grain improves; vegan leather stays the same; felt can pill lightly with heavy wear.
- Care: vegan leather needs a wipe; felt needs an occasional lint roll; full-grain likes a conditioner once or twice a year.
- Price: felt and vegan leather sit close together; full-grain costs more, as the material dictates.

Frequently asked questions
Is a leather desk mat better than felt?
Neither is better outright. Leather (full-grain or vegan) gives faster mouse tracking and easier cleaning; felt gives a softer, warmer, quieter surface. It comes down to whether you value precision and easy care or touch and acoustics.
Does vegan leather last as long as real leather?
A quality vegan leather mat lasts years of daily use. Full-grain leather typically lasts longer still and improves visually as it ages, whereas vegan leather keeps its original look until it eventually wears.
Do leather desk mats scratch easily?
Full-grain leather will pick up light marks with use — most blend into the patina over time. Vegan leather resists everyday scuffs well but marks won't "heal" into the surface the way they do on natural leather.
Are felt desk mats good for mouse use?
Yes for everyday work — tracking is accurate, just softer-feeling and slightly slower than on leather. If you need pixel-precise mouse work or you game, a firmer leather surface is the better pick.
